Here at Status Anxiety we recognise that in running a business we have a greater responsibility to reduce our environmental impact and do what we can to look after the people in all areas of our supply chain.
Responsible Types
Up Front
We're committed to doing our thing more sustainably and we’d love to share our current (and evolving) story. We're not perfect, but we're conscious, we're trying hard and we care.
Slow It Down
The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. One of the best things we can do as individual consumers is to keep our gear in use longer. Slower consumption is key. As a brand we're about creating quality, timeless pieces that last.
People Matter
Our Sydney team handle everything from product design, marketing, customer service, quality control and dispatch. Our goods are handmade by family-run businesses in China. We have annual contracts requiring safe and fair work conditions and we've visited them every year (except with COVID19) for the last 15 years to see for ourselves. We care for the people behind our gear, and all throughout our supply chain.
Planet Impacts
Reducing our environmental impact is a journey of continuous improvement. Over the past couple of years we've almost completely transitioned to using only biodegradable or recycled packaging. Plastic consumption in our supply chain has been reduced by more than 70% and we're working towards being plastic free. 100% of the supporting materials used for transporting our product (like cardboard boxes, paper and plastics) are recycled here in Sydney. Because the majority of our styles continue for years and years there's no end of season clearance/wastage. The majority of product that is returned to us with a fault is repaired and resold at our annual warehouse sale. No one likes a waster.
Why Leather
We choose to work with premium leather because it's a slow fashion material, natural, durable and ultimately biodegradable. Leather's a secondary material (bi-product of the meat industry that would otherwise end up in landfill). Our leather is expertly produced by our ethical tanneries based primarily in Italy and Brazil. Almost all of our tanneries are audited members of the Leather Working Group (an environmental standard that promotes sustainable business practices within the leather industry) and the others are completing their applications. Our products exceed the REACH regulations of the EU (the highest global standard) that protect human health and the environment from nasty chemicals.
Close To Our Hearts
Ending slavery and human trafficking is something we're passionate about. International Justice Mission is the largest anti-slavery organisation in the world. They exist to rescue and restore victims as well as restrain and prosecute perpetrators, breaking the cycle of slavery. We're proud to have donated over $100K to IJM already plus we'll donate at least another $20K every year in the future through the ongoing sales of our 'Set Them Free' Tee. We're so grateful for your ongoing support in sending rescue.
Better Together
We love that people are unique and beautifully diverse. We're thankful for the part we get to play in including that diversity in the business.
Keep Pushing
To make positive change we need to pursue a deeper understanding of our impact on people and the full life cycle of our product on the environment. Some of the practical changes we've earmarked for 2021 are to become 90% plastic free and to have all our tanneries certified with the Leather Working Group. We're also working to further control the environmental impacts and labour practices of our suppliers all the way back to the source. We're going for transparency so we can all make better choices and we invite you to join us on that journey.
